To Engage In
To Participate, To Take Part In
intransitive verb, godan verb
Somehow the kanji portable turns into the verb to engage in or to participate or to take part in. I suppose if you are portable, you're able to engage in all kinds of things, since you can move all over the place, participating everywhere you can (rather than being not portable and being stuck in one place).
You've been asked to engage in various activities, so you bring your Taz saw (たずさ), a Tasmanian-made saw. You never know what kind of carpentry or lumberjacking you'll be asked to take part in, and Taz saws are known for their versatility.
同僚の評価に携わるのは嫌だったが、選択の余地はなかった。
I didn't want to participate in an evaluation of my coworkers, but I didn't have a choice.
